A Worcester County family is $100,000 richer after winning a cash lotto held by the Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department.
Kevin and Ryn Rohe, Ocean City residents, won $100,000 on Labor Day after their ticket was drawn in the OPVFD’s annual cash lotto.
“We’re just excited,” Kevin Rohe said. “Very happy. I just wasn’t expecting it to happen.”
Rohe’s winning ticket, the only one he bought, was selected from 1,600 tickets that the fire department sold during the past year. Rohe said he had nearly forgotten about the lotto, as he had purchased his $100 ticket more than six months ago.
“My wife reminded me it was coming up,” he said.
For the past three years, the OPVFD has held a cash lotto with guaranteed winnings of $100,000 as its main fundraiser. In the past, before it got too expensive to do so, the fire department raffled off a home in Ocean Pines. Organizer Steve Rosen said the cash lotto fundraiser was popular because of the small number of tickets sold.
That is what enticed Rohe to buy a ticket.
“I just bought a ticket because the odds of winning were higher than Powerball,” he said.
And what are the Rohes going to do with the money?
“We’re going to put it right into our daughter’s college fund,” he said.
Rohe is pleased that he and his wife now have quite a jump on saving for their three-year-old daughter’s future.
