Local Lotto Winner Comes Forward

A Bakersfield man has claimed a quarter-million-dollar lottery prize and thanked God for the windfall, according to a California Lottery spokeman.

The man asked state officials to not release his name.

“I just feel so blessed, like God blessed me,” the man told Lottery officals, according to a news release.

The winner claimed his prize by mail. “I thought that’s the way you do it,” he told officials.

He bought the Mega Millions ticket at the Circle K store, at 5634 Stine Road on Aug. 26.

He had five of the numbers picked, but not the Mega number.

The prize is worth $245,771. The Lottery withholds 25 percent in federal taxes, so the winner will receive a check for about $184,000. There are no state taxes.

A ticket with all six numbers in tonight’s multi-state Mega Millions draw was sold in Ohio and is worth $15 million, California Lottery officials announced.

Four tickets – one each sold in Illinois, Massachusetts, Ohio and Virginia – had five numbers, but didn’t have the Mega number and are each worth $250,000.

The numbers drawn tonight were 13, 24, 39, 51, 52 and the Mega number was 44.

The drawing was the second since the last time a ticket with all six numbers was sold. A ticket sold in Maryland for last Tuesday’s draw had all six numbers and was worth $24 million.

Tickets with all six numbers have been sold in three of the last six draws. A ticket sold in Georgia for the Aug. 29 draw had all six numbers and was worth $132 million.

The odds of matching all five numbers and the Mega number is 1 in 175,711,536, according to the Mega Millions Web site.

The jackpot for Friday’s draw will be $12 million.

Besides California, the Mega Millions game is played in Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Texas, Virginia and Washington.

Local lotto winner still at large

The person who bought a winning lottery ticket at Mayer’s Freeway Shell Station in Newhall hasn’t claimed the $108,813 prize, a California Lottery spokesman said Tuesday.

A ticket in California Fantasy Five drawing was purchased at the station prior to the Aug. 20 drawing, said Eric Alborg, assistant press secretary for the California Lottery.

The winning numbers are 7, 8, 14, 18 and 39.

As of Aug. 21, the ticket holder has 180 days to claim the prize, or the winnings go back into the pot, Alborg said.

The person holding the ticket is encouraged to follow the contact information on the back of the ticket to claim the winnings, he said.

$10M lotto winner gets prison in fatal SoCal crash

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — A man who won $10 million in a California lottery game has been sentenced to more than 17 years in prison for a drunken-driving crash that killed three people.

Thomas Turnour had pleaded guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and causing injury while driving intoxicated.

The winner of a SuperLotto game in 2001 was sentenced Friday in San Bernardino.

Authorities say the 52-year-old man from Victorville was driving a pickup truck that hit a car stopped at a red light in San Bernardino three years ago. Three people inside the first car died.

His attorney says Turnour essentially “turned over everything he has” to settle a lawsuit filed by the victims’ families.
