One winning ticket was sold for the $310,000 cashpot in Saturday night’s drawing for the Washington State Lottery’s Hit 5 game.

Nobody won the $5.5 million Lotto jackpot, so Monday’s top prizes will be $5.6 million in Lotto and $100,000 in Hit 5.

In Lotto, 17 tickets were sold with five of the six winning numbers and are worth $1,000 each. Another 945 tickets had four winning numbers and are worth $30 apiece. Sales were $507,995 and the winning numbers were: 2-13-20-38-39-46.

In Hit 5, 42 tickets were sold with four of the five winning numbers and are worth $100 each, and 2,123 had three winning numbers for $10 payouts. Sales were $225,249 and the winning numbers were: 2-11-16-32-35.

Local woman wins lotto jackpot

Peggy Abernathy said she doesn’t normally like playing the last scratch-off lottery ticket on a roll, but the last ticket she scratched off netted her $5 million last week.

Abernathy, a Turner’s Corner resident, won a $5 million scratch-off lottery game Sept. 3. She bought the winning ticket at Chattahoochee Grocery, a gas station and convenience store on Highway 115 East in White County.

“We’ve had a $10,000 winner three times, but nothing this big,” said Joe Desai, who owns Chattahoochee Grocery. “Peggy’s husband didn’t believe (she had won) for two days.”

Abernathy, 42, didn’t believe she had won at first either.

“I sat in the truck and scratched it off,” she said. “I was surprised when I saw that $5 million on there. I took it to my sister’s house to let her verify it.”

Abernathy, the mother of two children and two grandchildren, plans to buy a house and a truck with her winnings.

“That’s all I really want,” she said.

She added that her infant grandson was born the day she bought the winning ticket.

“I’ll be spoiling my grandkids,” Abernathy said.

Despite her new wealth, Abernathy intends to keep working.

“I ain’t gonna quit work,” she said. “I don’t like sitting at home.”

Abernathy works on her sister Donna Loggins’ chicken farm, Faybon Farms, in White County.

“We’ve got to pick up more eggs. Those hens don’t quit laying,” she said.

Lotto curse haunts family of David Taylor

The curse of the family who scooped a $10 million Oz Lotto jackpot has led to another death, with the accidental shooting of their grandson by their son.

A shaking David Taylor, who won the money with his ex-wife Colleen, said yesterday the death of their league-mad grandson, Josh Astill, 15, had devastated the family.

“Torn apart, this has torn us apart,” said Mr Taylor, 57.

“We used to be a close family but there’s no money left and no family left. The win destroyed us.”

Their son William, 15, had found the 9mm Glock pistol hidden in their house in West Haven on Wednesday and told his nephew, Joshua. Joshua’s father is William’s half-brother.

“William pulled the gun out of the hiding spot and he told me that Joshua said ‘Oh, cool, give me a look’. And when he handed it to him the bullet must have been in the breach and the safety was off,” Mr Taylor said.

“They don’t know anything about guns. As William handed it to Joshua, it accidentally went off.”

He said Joshua was shot through the eye. William was questioned by police but has not been charged.

His mother and her partner, a 60-year-old man, have been charged with possession of a pistol and not ensuring the safe keeping of a pistol. Both were released and are due to appear at Port Macquarie Local Court on October 20.

Mr Taylor said William wanted to apologise to Joshua’s family but they did not want to talk to his side of the family.

Joshua’s mother yesterday told how her son spent the last night of his life watching his favourite TV show Wipeout with his family.

“When it was over, he gave me a kiss on the cheek, went to walk out the door but turned around and said ‘goodnight mum and dad’,” Lee Astill said, weeping.

Speaking for the first time since his death, Mrs Astill and her husband Ray could not put into words how they felt.

“Shattered is not the word for how we feel there is no word for how we feel,” she said.

“Kids are always supposed to be with you. I don’t know how much more this family can take.”

Mrs Astill said her son was the class clown and loved joking.

“He’d pull silly faces, he just stood out in a crowd,” she said.

It is the second shooting tragedy to hit the family, who gave away $3 million to family and friends and lost the rest in bad investments.

Melbourne ticket splits $30M Lotto jackpot

MELBOURNE — He didn’t win the big prize, but that didn’t stop Gary Danley from buying a Florida Lotto ticket at the Circle K where one of the two winning tickets for a $30 million payday was sold.

The winning tickets were bought in Poinciana and at the Circle K at 4420 West New Haven Ave. in Melbourne, officials said.

A total of 119 tickets matched five numbers to win $4,233.50 each; 7,182 tickets matched four numbers for $57 each; and 134,494 tickets matched three numbers for $4 each.

The winning Florida Lotto numbers selected Wednesday: 5-7-13-26-27-52.

At the Circle K on West New Haven Ave., others were hoping Thursday the luck might rub off on them as well.

“I buy my tickets here all the time,” the 58-year-old Melbourne resident said today. “I’m just glad someone here is getting the prize.”

The winners, who must claim the prize in Tallahassee, will split a $30 million jackpot. The names have not been released.

“They have 180-days to make a claim,” said Keeta Ray, a Florida Lotto official.
A total of 119 tickets were sold with five matching numbers, netting the ticket holders $4,233.50 each.

Jason Hansel, the manager of the Circle K, said he was pleased that the ticket was sold at his store. Behind the counter, he bantered with customers and gladly shared the news about the win.

“We get a lot of regulars here,” Hansel said, telling another customer that the winning ticket was sold at his store.

“I think this is great!”

ROANOKE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – Forgetting his glasses paid off in a big way for a Roanoke man.
Bobby Guffey and his wife Janell have claimed a $3 million Hoosier Lotto jackpot.

Guffey says he always plays the same numbers. But on the day he forgot his glasses, he inadvertently marked different numbers on the lotto sheet. The mistake turned out to be a lucky break, though, as the “wrong” numbers were drawn on August 6.

Guffey bought the winning ticket at the Econoasis on US 24 East in Huntington.

Bobby and Janell say they have already set up trust funds for their kids, and they plan to pay off their home and take a trip to Hawaii.

This series of rollovers began with the July 19 drawing when the estimated jackpot rolled from $3 million to $6 million.

The Florida Lotto jackpots are the highest single-state jackpots in the nation today among the 43 state lotteries. The Florida Lotto $55 million jackpot surpasses the multi-state lottery game, Powerball.

The highest jackpot since Florida Lotto began in 1988 was for $106.5 million on September 15, 1990, and resulted in six winning tickets. The second highest jackpot was on December 14, 2002, when four tickets split a $104.85 million jackpot.

Florida Lotto jackpot prizes are paid in 30 annual installments or as a one-time, lump-sum payment. Florida Lotto winners who purchase the $2 and/or $3 play may choose separate payment options for the base jackpot and the bonus jackpot prize.

Wednesday’s Florida Lotto drawing is expected to generate more than $21.2 million for public education in Florida.

OLYMPIA, Wash. Nobody won the Washington State Lottery’s $2.4 million Lotto jackpot or the $130,000 Hit 5 cashpot Monday night, so Wednesday’s top prizes will go to $2.6 million in Lotto and $170,000 in Hit 5.

In Lotto, five tickets were sold with five of the six winning numbers and are worth $1,000 each. Another 421 tickets had four winning numbers and are worth $30 apiece. Sales were $235,507 and the winning numbers were: 2-5-26-33-37-44.

In Hit 5, 40 tickets were sold with four of the five winning numbers and are worth $100 each, and 1,212 had three winning numbers for $10 payouts. Sales were $115,279 and the winning numbers were: 3-11-23-29-37.
