The officials said the couple, whose names were not released, told them the wife had tossed the winning ticket in the trash can the day after the Friday drawing, WBAL-TV, Baltimore, reported Monday.

However, the husband asked to see the ticket and the pair, who are originally from Korea, retrieved the item and realized they had won a prize.

“I looked at it and thought right away that we’d won something big,” the man told lottery officials.

The officials said the man had previously won a $50,000 prize in a 1998 Bonus Match 5 lottery.

Four tickets – one each sold in Illinois, Massachusetts, Ohio and Virginia – had five numbers, but didn’t have the Mega number and are each worth $250,000.

The numbers drawn tonight were 13, 24, 39, 51, 52 and the Mega number was 44.

The drawing was the second since the last time a ticket with all six numbers was sold. A ticket sold in Maryland for last Tuesday’s draw had all six numbers and was worth $24 million.

Tickets with all six numbers have been sold in three of the last six draws. A ticket sold in Georgia for the Aug. 29 draw had all six numbers and was worth $132 million.

The odds of matching all five numbers and the Mega number is 1 in 175,711,536, according to the Mega Millions Web site.

The jackpot for Friday’s draw will be $12 million.

Besides California, the Mega Millions game is played in Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Texas, Virginia and Washington.

None of the tickets sold for Tuesday’s $114 million drawing matched all five lotto numbers and the Mega Ball. The next drawing is Friday.

There were seven second-prize winners — none with tickets sold in Michigan — from Tuesday night’s drawing matching all five lotto numbers but not the Mega Ball number to win $250,000 each. Also, 58 tickets, including six bought in Michigan, matched four of the five lotto numbers, plus the Mega Ball number. Those tickets are each worth $10,000.

The winning numbers from Tuesday’s drawing were: six, 16, 24, 34, 36. The Mega Ball number was 30.
